Vehicle Ramming Attacks Around the World

The British police say that they do not consider the incident on Monday to be terrorism. Authorities report that 27 people were taken to the hospital and another 20 were treated on site for minor injuries.

Other mass vehicle collisions have taken lives. This year, 11 people died in Vancouver, British Columbia, when a sports utility vehicle accelerated down a closed street, running over people attending a festival. Fifteen people died in an attack on Bourbon Street that took place just before New Orleans hosted the Super Bowl.

LONDON, May 26, 2025 — A 53-year-old Briton drove his minivan into a multitude of Liverpool fans that they were celebrating their city’s football team winning the Premier League championship, which turned the cheers of joy into screams of terror and injured more than 45 people.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 26, 2025 — A suspect was charged with various charges of murder after a sports utility vehicle from Audi accelerated down a closed street, lined with food trucks, and hit people attending a festival, killing 11. Authorities say 32 people were injured. They also indicated that the suspect, a 30-year-old man, had a history of mental health issues.

NEW ORLEANS, January 1, 2025 — At least 15 people die and dozens are injured after A Texas citizen charges at someone with a vehicle against a crowd of pedestrians in the bustling French Quarter district of New Orleans, on New Year’s Day at 3:15 AM. The FBI reports that the suspect was Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42 years old. He dies in a shootout with the police.

ZHUhAI, China, November 11, 2024 — A 62-year-old driver rammed his car into people who were exercising. At a sports complex in southern China, killing 35. Authorities say the suspect is upset over his divorce. He pleads guilty to endangering public safety by dangerous means and is sentenced to death.

WAUKESHA, Wisconsin, November 21, 2021 — Six people die and dozens are injured after a man drove his SUV through a Christmas parade in a Milwaukee suburb. Darrell Brooks Jr., who had argued with his ex-girlfriend, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release.

LONDON, Ontario, June 6, 2021 — Four members of a Muslim family die when an attacker drives a pickup truck into them. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls it “a terrorist attack, motivated by hate.” White nationalist Nathaniel Veltman is sentenced to life in prison.

TORONTO, April 23, 2018 — Alek Minassian, 25 years old, drives a rented van into pedestrians, mostly women, on Yonge Street, Toronto’s main thoroughfare, killing 10 people and injuring 16. Minassian tells the police that he belongs to an online community of “incels,” made up of sexually frustrated men. He is sentenced to life in prison.

NEW YORK, October 31, 2017 — Sayfullo Saipov, an Islamic extremist from Uzbekistan, drives a pickup truck onto a popular bicycle path in New York City, killing eight people. He is found guilty of terrorism and sentenced to 10 life sentences plus 260 years in prison.

BARCELONA, Spain, August 17, 2017 — A man drives a van into people on the busy boulevard Las Ramblas in the Spanish city, killing 14 and injuring several others. The Islamic State group claims responsibility. Several members of the same extremist cell carry out a similar attack in the nearby tourist town of Cambrils, where they kill one person.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, August 12, 2017 — During a “Unite the Rightmbvc ” rally, white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. drives his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring dozens of people. Fields is serving a life sentence for murder and hate crimes.

LONDON, June 19, 2017 — Darren Osborne, a man radicalized by far-right ideologies, drives a van into worshippers outside a mosque in Finsbury Park, killing one man and injuring 15 others. He is sentenced to life in prison.

LONDON, June 3, 2017 — Three attackers drive a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people at the nearby Borough Market. Eight people die. Police shoot the attackers dead.

LONDON, March 22, 2017 — Khalid Masood drives a rental car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four, and then stabs a police officer guarding Parliament. Masood is shot dead.

MELBOURNE, Australia, January 20, 2017 — Six people die and more than 30 are injured when a car rams into crowds during lunchtime in a pedestrian shopping center. James Gargasoulas is determined to be in a drug-induced psychosis and is sentenced to life in prison.

BERLIN, December 19, 2016 — Anis Amri, a Tunisian whose asylum request had been rejected, drove a hijacked truck into a Christmas market in the German capital, killing 13 people and injuring dozens. The attacker was killed in a shootout in Italy days later.

NICE, France, July 14, 2016 — Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a French resident born in Tunisia, drives a rented truck through a crowded seaside promenade on the French Riviera during the Bastille Day holiday, killing 86 people in the deadliest attack of its kind. He is shot dead by police. Eight other people are sentenced to prison for helping orchestrate the attack.

STILLWATER, Oklahoma, October 24, 2015 — A woman drives a car into a crowd at a welcome parade for Oklahoma State University, killing four people, including a young child, and injuring many more. Adacia Chambers, who faced more than 40 charges of serious offenses, is serving four concurrent life sentences for the deaths.

APeldoorn, Netherlands, April 28, 2009 — Former security guard Karst Tates drives a car into spectators at a parade in an attempt to hit a convertible bus carrying members of the Dutch royal family. Six people die and Tates passes away the next day from his injuries. It is unknown why he did it.

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, March 3, 2006 — Mohamed Taheri-Azar, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, drove a sport utility vehicle into a crowd at the university, slightly injuring nine people, in an attempt to avenge the deaths of Muslims abroad, he said. He was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison.

SANTA MONICA, California, July 16, 2003 — An 86-year-old man crashed his car into a farmers market, killing 10 people and injuring dozens more. He was sentenced to probation after being found guilty of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
