The Argentine vehicle fleet ages more and more every day.

The average age increased from 14.1 to 14.3 years in twelve months. The complete AFAC report on the circulating vehicle fleet in our country.

The circulating vehicle fleet in Argentina is becoming increasingly outdated: in just twelve months it aged from 14.1 to 14.3 years

On average, out of a total of 15,552,418 vehicles in operation. This emerges from the annual report of AFAC, the association that brings together the main manufacturers of automotive parts in Argentina.

The circulating fleet is calculated based on information from the National Registry of Motor Vehicle Property (DNRPA) regarding vehicles in registration conditions to circulate. The data used is corrected with estimates of the annual mortality rates of the motor vehicle park, based on two information bases: the “cancellations” from the DNRPA and the “cancellations” of licenses collected through wrecked vehicles with declared cancellation. Additionally, it is verified with vehicles insured in Argentina (approximately 12 million), which do not represent the total circulating fleet since it does not include uninsured vehicles that are out of compliance or are for sale or consignment. This is because, predominantly, the stock of units from dealerships and distributors does not maintain active the mandatory insurance.

With that caveat and clarification, this is the complete AFAC report on the Circulating Vehicle Fleet in Argentina.

1.
The Argentine vehicle fleet at the end of 2024 was 15,552,418 vehicles (including cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles, excluding trailers and other towed vehicles), which represented an increase of 1% compared to 2023 (15,299,751 vehicles).

2.The ratio of inhabitants per vehicle in 2024 was 3.02, while this indicator in Brazil is 4.6, in Mexico it is 2.8, in Germany it is 1.6, and in the USA it is 1.1

3.Considering the entire circulating fleet, the average age was 14.3 years (it was 14.1 years in 2023). However, if only the fleet from the last 20 years (2005-2024) is taken into account, the average age was 9.8 years (it was 9.5 years for the period 2004-2023).

4.The size and age of the vehicle fleet are the most significant determinants in the replacement market, along with the kilometers driven. The value chain of the independent replacement market (manufacturers, specialized wholesale and retail trade, and workshops) is essential to ensure consumers the freedom of choice about where to repair their vehicles, without falling into captive markets.

5.The vehicle fleet has a dual character in which two well-differentiated segments of average ages coexist, with a relatively modern fleet and another old one. The circulating fleet up to 20 years old was 11.5 million vehicles (in 2023 it had been 11.4 million vehicles).

6.In order for the circulating fleet to maintain its average age, 1,100,000 vehicles should be incorporated annually, which foresees a deepening of vehicle aging, beyond the strong increase in vehicle sales in the domestic market so far in 2025.

7.The vehicle fleet was made up of 82% cars, 15% light commercial vehicles, and 3% heavy commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses (not considering trailers, motorcycles, quads, construction or agricultural machinery).

8.Gasoline-only vehicles accounted for 63% of the fleet, while diesel vehicles represented 25.2%. The participation of these decreased compared to 2010, when they accounted for 37% of the fleet. On the other hand, vehicles converted to CNG accounted for 11.2%, similar to the previous year.

9.Hybrid vehicles (gasoline/electric) in 2024 increased their share compared to 2023 by 69%, ending the year 2024 with a fleet of 46,657 units, driven by the availability of vehicles of this type of powertrain manufactured in the region. For vehicles with some form of electrification, the circulating fleet increased from 1,100 to 1,555 units (+41% YoY).

10.The 46.7% of the circulating fleet in 2024 was concentrated in the province of Buenos Aires and CABA. The province of Córdoba had the second largest fleet in the country, together with Santa Fe and Mendoza they accounted for 23.5% of the total. There were no changes regarding the distribution of the vehicle park by provinces and regions compared to the previous closure.
